A Pacific Life 401(k) balance faces the universal four options — keep it in the plan, roll it into a new employer’s plan, roll it into an IRA, or take a taxable distribution. Check your statement for any company stock before comparing costs, menus and your consolidation strategy.
Newport Beach’s quiet giant
Pacific Life has operated from Newport Beach for decades, employing actuaries, investment professionals, technologists, underwriters and service staff — a workforce that thinks about longevity, annuitisation and market risk all day. Its people leave for carriers, asset managers and consulting firms across the region, and they tend to arrive at this decision better informed than most.
The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Pacific Life Insurance Company Retirement Incentive Savings Plan; Principal Life Insurance Company is listed for recordkeeping. Your SPD, statement or HR confirms the plan line-up and any match.
Your four options
An actuary would call this a four-state decision with observable inputs. The inputs are in your fee disclosure; the states are below.
| Option | Good when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Leave it | Low internal costs and a lineup you would choose anyway | Easy to lose track of; small accounts can be swept out automatically |
| Roll to new employer | One statement, one login, one set of rules going forward | You are trading a known plan for one you have not read yet |
| Roll to an IRA | Broadest investment choice and easier professional management | Creditor protection and backdoor-Roth mechanics differ from a plan |
| Cash out | Last-resort liquidity in a real emergency | The IRS takes its share now, adds a penalty under 59½, and the account stops working |
Things to check in your specific Pacific Life plan
Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.
- The recordkeeper and paperwork route. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Pacific Life Insurance Company Retirement Incentive Savings Plan; Principal Life Insurance Company is listed for recordkeeping.
- Vesting on company contributions. Confirm the vested figure in writing before selecting an exit date.
- The menu’s institutional pricing. Insurer-sponsored plans can be well priced; if yours is, that is a genuine argument for the leave-it column.
- Annuity options inside or alongside the plan. Your statement, SPD or HR confirms any annuity options and contract terms.
- Roth and after-tax buckets. Your SPD and statement show any Roth and after-tax features.
- Nonqualified deferred compensation, separately. Senior staff may hold NQDC balances that follow contract terms and payout elections, not rollover rules — different document, different deadlines.
Check the stock question before comparing destinations
Check your statement for any company stock. Then make the comparison that decides most rollovers anyway — total cost in the plan versus total cost in the alternative, weighted by menu quality, consolidation value and any backdoor-Roth plans. For insurance professionals who may also hold NQDC, the sharper edge is coordination: nonqualified money pays out on its own schedule, and the 401(k) decision should be made with that schedule in view.
Always transfer directly. Send the balance institution-to-institution and it arrives whole. Let it be paid to you personally and IRC § 3405(c) removes 20% before the envelope is sealed — recoverable only by completing a 60-day rollover with the withheld share restored from your own funds.
Common questions
As an insurance professional, should I roll my 401(k) into an annuity?
Only as a deliberate income decision, never as a default exit. Annuitising part of a portfolio can genuinely de-risk retirement income, but it is a product purchase with costs and irreversibility — analytically separate from the rollover itself. Decide the destination first, the income strategy second.
Does my NQDC balance roll over with the 401(k)?
No — nonqualified deferred compensation is a contractual promise, not qualified plan money. It pays out per your elections and the plan document, is taxed as it pays, and cannot enter an IRA. Treat it as a separate workstream with its own, often earlier, deadlines.
Why would a Pacific Life employee hire an outside adviser?
For the same reason surgeons do not operate on family: independence. We hold no position in your employer’s products, earn nothing from your choice, and can coordinate the 401(k), any NQDC and your outside assets on one page — for one disclosed fee.
