Your Hyundai Motor America 401(k) can stay in the plan, move into your next employer’s plan, roll into an IRA, or be cashed out — with the last option carrying income tax and, under 59½, usually a 10% penalty. Check your statement for any company stock.
Fountain Valley’s automotive headquarters
Hyundai Motor America has run its national operations from Fountain Valley for decades, a short drive from our Norwalk office, with a workforce spanning marketing, finance, engineering liaison, dealer operations, legal and customer care. Add the affiliated design, testing and mobility operations around Southern California and the region hosts a substantial Hyundai professional community.
The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Hyundai Motor America Profit Sharing Retirement Plan; it includes a 401(k) feature. Your SPD, statement or HR confirms the plan line-up and any match.
Your four options
The decision is the standard federal one. What varies — and what the checklist below chases down — is the plan machinery underneath it.
| Option | Good when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Leave it | The current plan is cheap, well run, and you may return someday | Forced cash-outs of small balances; one more account to forget |
| Roll to new employer | A single consolidated plan balance is simpler to manage | Read the new plan’s fees before assuming it is an upgrade |
| Roll to an IRA | Maximum control over investments, beneficiaries, and advice | Mixing pre-tax IRA dollars complicates future Roth conversion planning |
| Cash out | No other option exists and the need is immediate | Ordinary income tax, usually a 10% penalty under 59½, and the money never compounds again |
Things to check in your specific Hyundai plan
Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.
- The recordkeeper and transfer mechanics. Your recordkeeper is named on your statement and in the Summary Plan Description (SPD); it handles the rollover forms.
- Your vested percentage, in writing. Employer contributions vest on the plan’s timetable; resigning weeks before a vesting date is a mistake a calendar can prevent.
- Whether any employer-stock or foreign-stock fund exists. Check your SPD and statement for the fund menu, and check your statement for any company stock.
- After-tax contributions and Roth balances. Your SPD and statement show any after-tax and Roth features.
- Outstanding loans and recent withdrawals. Your SPD, statement or HR confirms any loan provisions and prior withdrawals.
- Accounts at affiliated entities. If you moved between Hyundai-affiliated companies, balances may exist in more than one plan — inventory before acting.
Check the plan before comparing destinations
Check your statement for any company stock and your SPD for the fund menu. The difference between a well-priced plan and a high-cost IRA still compounds for decades — but it is at least a question you can answer from statements alone.
Always transfer directly. Route any rollover directly from the plan to the receiving custodian. Under IRC § 3405(c), a distribution paid to you personally is withheld at 20%, and you then have 60 days to complete the rollover — including recreating the withheld portion out of your own pocket.
Common questions
I am moving to another automaker’s U.S. arm. Plan-to-plan or IRA?
Both work mechanically; the choice is comparative. Plan-to-plan keeps everything in ERISA-governed accounts and preserves clean backdoor-Roth math; an IRA offers the wider menu and one consolidated home. Read the receiving plan’s fee disclosure before defaulting either way.
Does my Hyundai 401(k) hold Hyundai stock?
Check the fund lineup on your statement — that is the only reliable answer. U.S. plans of foreign-listed parents often run all-fund menus, which would make the employer-stock tax questions moot for you. If any employer security does appear, get advice before rolling it.
What is the cost of a review with your firm?
Zero for the conversation, and zero unless you engage us. As fee-only fiduciaries our sole compensation is the transparent asset-based fee we publish — no product, custodian or fund pays us anything.
