An Amazon 401(k) can stay in the plan, transfer into your next employer’s plan, roll into an IRA, or be cashed out — and for shorter tenures the real danger is neglect, because small balances can be forced out of a plan whether you are paying attention or not. RSUs, if you received them, vest outside the 401(k) and follow their own rules.
The employer next door, at enormous scale
Amazon’s logistics network runs straight through southeast Los Angeles County and northern Orange County — fulfillment centers, sortation sites and delivery stations that employ warehouse associates, drivers, and operations and corporate staff across the cities around our Norwalk office.
High-volume employers produce high volumes of departures, and departures produce orphaned 401(k)s. The decision below takes thirty minutes; skipping it is how five-figure balances end up scattered, forgotten, or involuntarily cashed out with tax consequences nobody chose on purpose.
Your four options
Same federal menu as every 401(k) — but with shorter tenures, the leave-it and small-balance rows deserve extra attention.
| Option | Good when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Leave it | The plan’s institutional pricing is genuinely low and you like the menu | Small balances can be forced out; orphaned accounts get forgotten |
| Roll to new employer | You want everything in one place and the new plan is decent | The new menu and fees may be worse than what you are leaving |
| Roll to an IRA | You want wider choice, control, or ongoing advice | An IRA balance can complicate a future backdoor Roth (pro-rata rule) |
| Cash out | A genuine emergency with no other source of cash | Income tax now, a 10% penalty under 59½, and the compounding is gone |
Things to check in your specific Amazon plan
Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.
- The recordkeeper and your login. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Amazon 401(k) Plan; Fidelity is listed as recordkeeper. Confirm your access details on your statement.
- Vesting on employer contributions. Whether the match is fully yours depends on the plan’s schedule and your service — get your vested balance in writing.
- Small-balance force-out rules. Federal law lets plans cash out or automatically roll over vested balances up to $7,000; your plan's threshold and any IRA provider are in the SPD.
- Company stock in the plan, if any. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Amazon 401(k) Plan; it held Amazon stock at the end of 2024.
- Any outstanding loan or hardship history. Your SPD, statement or HR confirms any loan provisions and prior withdrawals.
Where RSUs fit — and where they do not
Amazon compensates many employees partly in restricted stock units, and those vest in a brokerage account outside the 401(k). They are not part of the rollover decision, but they are part of your picture: vested shares are simply stock you own, taxed when they vested, and concentration in one employer’s stock is a risk worth managing deliberately. Only shares held inside the 401(k) — if your plan offers that — raise the separate NUA analysis.
Always transfer directly. Request a direct transfer to the receiving custodian and the whole balance moves untouched. Accept a cheque in your own name and 20% is withheld under IRC § 3405(c) — recoverable at tax time, but only if you complete the rollover within 60 days using replacement money you supply.
Common questions
I only worked there a couple of years. Is a small balance worth the hassle?
Yes, precisely because small balances are the ones plans push out. A forced cash-out can arrive as taxable income you never requested. Fifteen minutes of paperwork rolls it somewhere permanent, and small accounts compound into real ones — that is the entire point of the system.
Do my RSUs roll over with the 401(k)?
No. RSUs vest into a regular brokerage account and are yours outright — no rollover exists or is needed. The decisions there are about taxes and concentration, not custodians.
Is there a minimum to get help from your firm?
No minimum to open, and a $50 monthly deposit to keep the account going — that pairing is deliberately part of how this firm is built. A warehouse associate’s first rollover gets the same fiduciary standard as a director’s. Our fees are published and asset-based; nobody pays us but our clients.
