An SCE 401(k) balance has the standard four destinations — stay, new plan, IRA, or cash — and long service raises the stakes on getting it right. Two preliminary questions matter more here than at most employers: whether you also have a pension benefit, and whether any of the account sits in shares of Edison International, SCE’s publicly traded parent.
Powering the region, employing its neighbours
Southern California Edison delivers electricity across much of the territory we serve, and its linemen, plant and grid operators, engineers, planners and customer-operations staff are the kind of long-tenured workforce that retires with serious account balances — often after thirty-plus years with one employer.
Your SPD or HR confirms whether your employee group has pension coverage.
Your four options
For the 401(k) balance alone. Any pension benefit is decided separately and usually matters more.
| Option | Good when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Leave it | Fees are institutional-class and the lineup suits how you invest | Balances under the plan’s cash-out threshold can be involuntarily distributed |
| Roll to new employer | Consolidation matters to you and the receiving plan is well run | You inherit whatever menu and pricing the new employer chose |
| Roll to an IRA | You value flexibility and a full universe of investments | Pre-tax IRA money can snarl the pro-rata math on a later backdoor Roth |
| Cash out | True hardship and every alternative is exhausted | Tax plus an early-distribution penalty before 59½ — and decades of growth surrendered |
Things to check in your specific SCE plan
Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.
- Whether a pension benefit exists for you. Your SPD or HR confirms pension coverage for your employee group.
- Edison International stock in the plan. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Edison 401(k) Savings Plan; it held Edison International stock at the end of 2024.
- The recordkeeper. Your recordkeeper is named on your statement and in the Summary Plan Description (SPD); it handles the rollover forms.
- Vesting and any after-tax balances. Long service usually means full vesting, but confirm rather than assume — and after-tax dollars deserve Roth-aware handling.
- Union agreement terms. Represented employees’ benefits follow the collective bargaining agreement, which can differ from the management plan on key points.
The Edison International stock question
Because SCE’s parent trades publicly, employees whose plans hold company stock have access — in the right circumstances — to net unrealised appreciation treatment: take the shares out in-kind, pay ordinary tax only on their cost basis, and defer capital-gains treatment on the growth. A conventional IRA rollover of those shares waives the option forever. Thirty-year employees with legacy stock positions are exactly the profile for whom this calculation is worth an hour of a professional’s time.
Always transfer directly. Route the money directly from plan to receiving custodian. Under IRC § 3405(c), a cheque made out to you personally is docked 20% for federal withholding, and the 60-day rollover window then obliges you to make up that fifth from your own resources.
Common questions
I have heard some Edison employees have a pension too. Do I?
Your SPD or HR confirms pension coverage for your employee group. Request a full accrued-benefits statement before you set a retirement date; a pension election, if you have one, outranks the 401(k) decision in consequence.
Is leaving the money in the SCE plan a reasonable choice?
Frequently, yes — large plans can carry institutional pricing an IRA cannot match. The case for moving rests on investment choice, consolidation, advice, or stock strategy, not on any rule that says departing money must depart.
What will a review with your firm cost me?
There's no charge for the review conversation, and it obligates nothing. Ongoing management, if you choose it, is billed at the asset-based rate published on our fees page — with no commissions and no third-party payments underneath it.
