Leaving The Walt Disney Company: Your 401(k)/Retirement Plan Options

Whether you wore a name tag in Anaheim or a badge in Burbank, leaving comes with a retirement decision — and the first question is which plan you were actually in.

Aduna Capital is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Walt Disney Company. This page is educational, not advice, and describes general rules only. Plan details vary and change; verify with your plan administrator or Summary Plan Description before acting. General figures here were reviewed in October 2026.
The short answer

When you leave Disney, your retirement plan balance can remain in the plan, follow you into a new employer’s plan, roll into an IRA, or be paid out in cash — the last with a tax bill attached. Because a company this size commonly maintains different arrangements for different employee groups, confirm which plan covered you before comparing anything.

The largest employer in Anaheim, and then some

Between the Disneyland Resort, its hotels and its supporting operations, The Walt Disney Company employs tens of thousands of people in Orange County alone — cast members working hourly attractions and food service, salaried leaders, entertainers, technicians and corporate staff. Many live in the cities we serve, from Buena Park and Fullerton to Norwalk itself.

Your statement, SPD or HR confirms which plan covers your employee group.

Your four options

Once you know which plan is yours, the decision follows the same federal menu every 401(k) participant faces.

Leave itThe current plan is cheap, well run, and you may return somedayForced cash-outs of small balances; one more account to forget
Roll to new employerA single consolidated plan balance is simpler to manageRead the new plan’s fees before assuming it is an upgrade

Things to check in your specific Disney plan

Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.

  • Which plan you were enrolled in. Ask HR and check your statement and SPD for the plan covering your employee group.
  • The recordkeeper. The Form 5500 filings for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) list the Disney Savings and Investment Plan, Disney Hourly Savings and Investment Plan and Disney Retirement Savings Plan, each listing Fidelity as recordkeeper.
  • Company stock in the account. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Disney Savings Plan Master Trust; it held Disney stock at the end of 2024.
  • Vesting on the match. Your SPD and statement show the match and vesting terms that apply to your account.
  • Loans, and small-balance rules. Seasonal and shorter-tenure cast members often leave with modest balances, which are exactly the accounts plans can force out — do not assume yours will sit untouched.

If your plan balance includes Disney stock

Employer shares inside a retirement plan get a special tax option on the way out: net unrealised appreciation. Distribute the stock in-kind instead of rolling it, pay ordinary tax on the cost basis alone, and the growth waits to be taxed at capital-gains rates. Roll the shares to an IRA instead and the option is gone for good — so anyone with appreciated stock in the plan should get this priced before signing anything.

Always transfer directly. Ask for a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer every time. A distribution cheque made out to you personally loses 20% to mandatory federal withholding under IRC § 3405(c), and restoring the full balance within the 60-day window means fronting that withheld slice yourself.

Common questions

I was an hourly cast member. Is my plan the same as a salaried employee’s?

Not necessarily — large employers frequently maintain separate plans or separate terms for different employee groups, and union contracts add another layer. The name printed on your own statement, and the SPD behind it, settle the question; comparisons with a co-worker’s plan may simply be comparing two different plans.

I worked seasonally and my balance is small. Can I just ignore it?

Ignoring it is riskier than it sounds: plans can involuntarily cash out or auto-roll small balances, and unclaimed accounts drift. Even a small balance deserves ten minutes — often the right answer is a quick consolidation into an IRA or your next plan.
