Leaving Blizzard Entertainment: Your 401(k)/Retirement Plan Options

Game studios change owners the way games change patches. Your 401(k) options do not change with the logo — but the plan behind them can, which is why the questions below matter.

The short answer

Leaving Blizzard, your 401(k) balance has the same four destinations as any participant’s: stay in the plan, transfer to a new employer’s plan, roll to an IRA, or cash out and pay the tax. Because Blizzard’s corporate ownership has changed — most recently into Microsoft — treat everything about the plan itself as a question to re-verify: which plan now holds your money, who administers it, and whether older balances migrated.

An Irvine studio with a changing letterhead

Blizzard Entertainment has been one of Irvine’s signature employers for three decades, its campus filled with developers, artists, producers, QA analysts and esports and support staff. Corporately, the studio has lived under several roofs — most recently joining Microsoft when the Activision Blizzard acquisition closed in 2023.

The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Activision Blizzard 401(k) Plan; Fidelity is listed as recordkeeper. Your statement or HR confirms whether balances have since moved to another plan.

Your four options

Whoever owns the studio, federal law sets this menu. Verify the plan facts first, then choose from it deliberately.

Things to check in your specific plan

Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.

  • Which plan currently holds your balance. Your statement or HR confirms which plan holds your balance and whether it has since moved to another plan.
  • The recordkeeper and your post-badge login. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Activision Blizzard 401(k) Plan; Fidelity is listed as recordkeeper. Confirm the current plan and access details with your statement or HR.
  • Company stock in the account, and whose. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Activision Blizzard 401(k) Plan; no employer securities were reported at the end of 2024. Check your statement for any company stock.
  • Vesting on employer contributions. Acquisitions sometimes accelerate vesting and sometimes do not — get your own number in writing rather than relying on hallway consensus.
  • Equity compensation outside the plan. RSUs and options follow their grant agreements and the acquisition’s conversion terms, not 401(k) rules — separate paperwork, separate deadlines.

What an ownership change can and cannot do to your money

What it cannot do: take away your vested balance, or change the federal menu of four options you hold as a participant. What it can do: merge the plan into another, change the recordkeeper and forms, swap the fund lineup, and alter matching and vesting for future contributions. That is why the practical advice after any acquisition is boring and effective — pull a current statement, read the current SPD, and re-confirm anything you last checked under the old ownership.

If you left before or during the transition and have not looked since, assume nothing: old login portals and even plan names may have been retired since your last statement.

Always transfer directly. Direct transfers between institutions move the full balance with zero withholding. A cheque made payable to you personally triggers the mandatory 20% of IRC § 3405(c), and finishing a tax-free rollover inside 60 days then depends on you supplying the withheld fifth yourself.

Common questions

Did the Microsoft acquisition change my Blizzard 401(k)?

Possibly, in administration if not in substance — acquirers commonly consolidate plans on their own schedule. Your vested balance stayed yours throughout; the plan holding it, the recordkeeper and the fund menu may have changed. Your newest statement and SPD are the authorities, not forums or this page.

I left the studio years ago and never moved the account. Is it still there?

Probably, but perhaps not where you left it: plan mergers relocate accounts, and small balances can be force-transferred to an IRA provider chosen by the plan. Start with the last recordkeeper you knew, then HR; the Department of Labor’s lost-plan resources exist for the cold trails.

Should game-industry people just default to an IRA, given the layoff cycles?

An IRA does consolidate well across a choppy career, but it is not automatic: plan pricing can be better, and IRA balances complicate a future backdoor Roth. The churn argues for having a standing decision framework — not for one fixed answer.
