Your Northrop Grumman savings plan balance has four possible destinations: stay put, transfer to your next employer’s plan, roll to an IRA, or be cashed out. If any of the balance is invested in Northrop Grumman stock, get the net-unrealised-appreciation question answered before you roll anything — a full IRA rollover closes that door permanently.
A South Bay institution, a mobile workforce
Northrop Grumman is one of the anchor employers of the South Bay aerospace corridor, with major operations around El Segundo and Redondo Beach, and plenty of its engineers, technicians and program staff commute in from the southeast Los Angeles County cities we serve.
Defense careers often hop between primes and startups as programs wind up and down, which means many aerospace families accumulate a trail of old plans. Each move is a fresh chance to make — or repeat — the same rollover decision, so it is worth getting the framework right once.
Your four options
The menu is set by federal law; the details that decide the winner — costs, funds, stock, loans — live inside your specific plan.
| Option | Good when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Leave it | Fees are institutional-class and the lineup suits how you invest | Balances under the plan’s cash-out threshold can be involuntarily distributed |
| Roll to new employer | Consolidation matters to you and the receiving plan is well run | You inherit whatever menu and pricing the new employer chose |
| Roll to an IRA | You value flexibility and a full universe of investments | Pre-tax IRA money can snarl the pro-rata math on a later backdoor Roth |
| Cash out | True hardship and every alternative is exhausted | Tax plus an early-distribution penalty before 59½ — and decades of growth surrendered |
Things to check in your specific Northrop Grumman plan
Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.
- Whether you hold employer stock in the plan. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Northrop Grumman Savings Plan; the filing shows an employee stock ownership (ESOP) feature. Check your statement for Northrop Grumman stock.
- The recordkeeper and transfer process. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Northrop Grumman Savings Plan; Fidelity is listed as recordkeeper.
- How much of the match is vested. Employer contributions vest on the plan’s schedule, not yours — confirm your date before giving notice.
- After-tax contributions and in-plan conversions. Your SPD and statement show any after-tax contribution and conversion provisions.
- Any outstanding loan. Your SPD or HR explains any loan provisions and repayment options.
If you hold Northrop Grumman stock inside the plan
Northrop Grumman is publicly traded, and long-tenured employees sometimes carry appreciated employer shares inside their retirement plan. The tax code offers those shares a distinct exit: net unrealised appreciation (NUA) treatment, under which the stock is distributed in-kind, ordinary income tax is paid only on the original cost basis, and the growth is taxed later at capital-gains rates.
Roll those shares into an IRA and NUA is extinguished — permanently. The technique only pays off in specific fact patterns, and it demands a properly executed lump-sum distribution, so this is a run-the-numbers-first situation, not a default. The point is simply that the analysis must happen before the rollover paperwork, because it cannot happen after.
Always transfer directly. A trustee-to-trustee transfer moves the full balance with zero withholding. Take the money as a cheque payable to you and IRC § 3405(c) forces 20% federal withholding — and to complete a tax-free rollover within 60 days you must replace that withheld fifth out of pocket.
Common questions
I am moving to another defense contractor. Should I just roll into their plan?
Sometimes — consolidation is genuinely valuable — but read the receiving plan first. Menus and fees differ meaningfully between contractors, and if you hold employer stock the NUA analysis must come before any transfer, in either direction.
What exactly does rolling over cost me with your firm?
Nothing unless you hire us. If we end up managing the IRA, you pay our published asset-based fee and that is the complete list — fee-only means no commissions and no revenue from any product or custodian.
Is NUA always worth it if I have company stock?
No — it helps most when the shares are highly appreciated and you would otherwise pay high ordinary rates on withdrawal. For modest appreciation or small positions, a plain rollover often wins. It is a calculation, not a rule of thumb, and your CPA should be in the room.
