Your SpaceX 401(k) faces the standard four options — leave it, move it to your next employer’s plan, roll it to an IRA, or cash it out. Your equity is a separate matter entirely: private-company shares and options live outside the 401(k), run on their own contractual deadlines, and are usually the more time-sensitive of the two.
Hawthorne’s rocket factory and its restless talent
SpaceX’s headquarters and factory in Hawthorne sit minutes from the cities we serve, employing engineers, technicians, machinists and operations staff at famously high intensity. Tenures are often shorter than at legacy aerospace primes, which makes the leaving-your-plan decision a repeat event in many SpaceX careers.

Your four options for the 401(k)
The 401(k) itself is the straightforward half of your departure: standard rules, standard menu, decided on your schedule rather than the company’s.
| Option | Good when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Leave it | Institutional share classes priced below anything retail | The plan can push out small balances, and forgotten accounts drift |
| Roll to new employer | Simplicity: future-you deals with one plan instead of several | Menus vary wildly — the receiving plan may be the weaker one |
| Roll to an IRA | Freedom to hold nearly anything and to hire the adviser you choose | Once money is in a pre-tax IRA, backdoor Roth math gets harder |
| Cash out | A verified emergency after every cheaper source of funds | Tax at your marginal rate, a likely 10% penalty under 59½, and lost decades of growth |
Things to check in your specific SpaceX plan
Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.
- The recordkeeper and plan basics. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the Space Exploration Technologies 401(k) Plan; Fidelity is listed as recordkeeper.
- Vesting on any employer contribution. Confirm what portion of employer money is yours as of your separation date.
- After-tax contribution features. Check your SPD and statement for any after-tax contribution features.
- Outstanding loans. Your SPD or HR explains any loan provisions and post-separation repayment options.
- Your equity paperwork — separately. Option exercise windows after departure can be short and are set by contract, not by retirement law. Read the grant documents the week you decide to leave, not the week after.
Your equity is not your 401(k)
Stock and options at a private company are compensation contracts, not retirement-plan assets. They do not roll over, they are not protected by the rules on this page, and their deadlines — exercise windows, transfer restrictions, tender-offer timing — come from your agreements with the company.

Always transfer directly. Have the balance sent custodian-to-custodian, never as a cheque to you. Once a payout is made in your name, IRC § 3405(c) requires 20% withholding, and completing the rollover within 60 days obliges you to cover that missing 20% from other money.
Common questions
What happens to my SpaceX stock or options when I leave?
Whatever your grant agreements say — that is the honest and complete answer. Vesting stops per the contract, unexercised options typically face a post-termination window, and liquidity depends on company-run events. None of it is governed by 401(k) rules, so treat those documents as the urgent reading.
Should I roll the 401(k) to an IRA or park it until I land somewhere?
Both are legitimate. Leaving it in place preserves institutional pricing while you decide; an IRA maximises choice and consolidates strays. What rarely makes sense is cashing out to bridge a job gap — the tax and penalty make it brutally expensive money.
Can you advise on the equity too?
We can model how a liquidity event or exercise decision fits your broader finances, and we coordinate with your CPA on the tax specifics. What we never do is take a commission on any of it — our only compensation is our disclosed advisory fee.
