Leaving Raytheon (RTX): Your 401(k)/Retirement Plan Options

Hughes, Raytheon, RTX — the badge has changed names across generations of local aerospace careers, and the accounts carry that history. Sorting it out is step one.

Aduna Capital is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by RTX (Raytheon). This page is educational, not advice, and describes general rules only. Plan details vary and change; verify with your plan administrator or Summary Plan Description before acting. General figures here were reviewed in October 2026.
The short answer

A savings-plan balance at RTX — or one left behind at a legacy Raytheon employer — has four destinations: stay, move to your next employer’s plan, roll to an IRA, or cash out with taxes and usually a penalty. Company history adds two chores: confirm which plan actually holds each balance after decades of mergers, and screen any RTX shares for net unrealised appreciation before rolling a single one.

From Hughes to RTX: the local lineage

Southern California’s Raytheon story runs through El Segundo’s space and airborne-systems campus and the storied Fullerton ground-systems site — facilities whose engineers, technicians and program staff have watched the nameplate evolve from Hughes Aircraft through Raytheon to today’s RTX, formed when Raytheon and United Technologies merged in 2020.

The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the RTX Savings Plan; Alight Solutions is listed for recordkeeping. Ask HR and check your statement and SPD for the status of any legacy Raytheon plans.

Your four options

Apply the menu to each balance you confirm — a legacy account and a current one need not share an answer.

Things to check in your specific RTX / legacy Raytheon plan

Plan facts on this page come from the plan's public Form 5500 filing for 2024; plans change, so confirm with your current statement.

  • RTX stock in any account. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the RTX Savings Plan; the RTX Savings Plan Master Trust held RTX stock at the end of 2024.
  • Which plan holds each balance. Ask HR and check your statements and SPD for any legacy Raytheon plans.
  • The recordkeeper for each account. The plan's Form 5500 filing for 2024 (public at efast.dol.gov) lists the RTX Savings Plan; Alight Solutions is listed for recordkeeping.
  • Any pension benefit from earlier eras. Long-tenured aerospace employees sometimes hold frozen defined-benefit rights from predecessor employers — a separate, non-rollover decision to confirm.
  • Vesting, after-tax money and loans. Your SPD, statement or HR confirms vesting, after-tax provisions and any loan repayment options.

The RTX stock (NUA) decision

Because RTX trades publicly, employer shares inside the plan carry the net-unrealised-appreciation option: distribute the stock in-kind, pay ordinary income tax on the cost basis alone, and let the appreciation wait for capital-gains rates at sale. Shares accumulated across the Hughes and Raytheon decades can carry a very low basis, which is precisely the profile where the election earns its complexity.

It is also the easiest tax break in the building to destroy: one signed rollover form moving those shares into an IRA ends the option permanently, and the qualifying lump-sum-distribution rules punish improvisation. If any employer stock shows on your statement, the sequence is fixed — analysis with a tax professional first, paperwork second.

Always transfer directly. Every balance you move should travel plan-to-custodian. A cheque issued to you personally is reduced 20% by IRC § 3405(c) withholding before you see it, and completing a tax-free rollover within 60 days then means producing the withheld amount from your own reserves.

Common questions

My savings go back to Hughes Aircraft. Could I still have money in an old plan?

It is worth a search. Merged plans usually absorbed old balances, but frozen accounts and unclaimed benefits from predecessor plans surface regularly. Start with RTX HR and your oldest statements; the Department of Labor’s abandoned-plan and PBGC databases cover the coldest trails.

Does the 2020 merger affect what my shares qualify for under NUA?

The mechanics of NUA follow the plan and the employer-securities rules, not the merger headlines — but corporate transactions can affect cost basis and which securities your account holds. That is a records question first, then a CPA question. Get both answered before any rollover.

I am moving to a smaller defense firm. Take the balance along?

Only after reading the receiving plan — large-plan pricing like a major prime’s is hard for small plans to match. Consolidation is a real benefit, but so is institutional pricing, and the stock question outranks both until it is settled.

Decades of aerospace savings, one careful exit
